Universal Credit Application Form: How to Apply.
Universal Credit is a benefit you can claim if you’re low-income or unemployed.
Who can apply for Universal Credit?
It might be worth claiming universal credit if:
- you’re struggling to pay the bills
- you’ve lost your job and have no income
- your income has dropped but you’re still working
- you have a disability or illness that stops you working
- you have childcare costs
- you’re caring for someone
If you already have other benefits, you might have to move to Universal Credit instead.
There’s no set level of income at which you stop being eligible for Universal Credit; it depends on your situation.
How to apply for Universal Credit
You’ll usually have to apply for Universal Credit online. The first thing you need to do is set up an online account; you’ll use this to apply for and manage your claim.
Then you’ll need to complete four more steps before you can get Universal Credit. You’ll need to:
- Answer questions about your situation; this is called your ‘to-do list’
- confirm your identity. You can do this online or in person
- book an appointment with your work coach; you’ll meet them regularly as part of your Universal Credit claim
- speak to your work coach at the job center or on the phone; they’ll check your details and agree what tasks you’ll do regularly to get Universal Credit
Make sure you complete all of these steps; you’ll need to do them all before you can get your Universal Credit payment.

Benefits and money you can get
It will usually take 5 weeks to get your first Universal Credit payment, but you can ask to have some money paid sooner.
If you pay council tax, the council might reduce how much you have to pay. Most people who get Universal Credit can claim this too.
You might also be able to get money from other benefits too, for example, if you’re a carer or have a long-term health condition.
You can use the free Turn2us or Entitledto benefit calculators to check which benefits you can get. You’ll need to be a British or Irish citizen to use the calculator.
How is Universal Credit paid?
You’ll usually get a single Universal Credit payment every month. This will be paid directly into your bank, building society, or credit union account.
If you don’t have a bank account, you’ll need to open one.
If you’ve tried to open an account and had your application refused, you’ll need to use the Payment Exception Service.
You’ll need to explain why you can’t open a bank account. If you need more advice about opening a bank account, you can talk to an adviser.
